Some of the richest ocean habitats are where the land and sea meet. The intertidal zone is home to an incredible diversity of invertebrates, animals without a backbone, that make up 97% of all animal species. Mangrove forests supply many important ecosystem functions, including providing nursery habitats for many marine organisms. And kelp forests provide rich habitat for temperate species where cold ocean currents abut the coast. Additionally, many endangered marine organisms, like sea turtles and marine mammals, are found in coastal habitats.

Students participating in TIDES Land & Sea will complete Ocean First Education's Marine Invertebrates: The Other 97% course. In addition, students will either take Marine Mammals: A Life Aquatic course or Sea Turtle Ecology depending on their expedition location.

The Nitrox and Perfect Buoyancy SCUBA specialties are a prerequisite for this expedition. These prerequisites can be added onto the cost of the expedition and students can receive instruction through Ocean First. The SSI Specialties Computer Diving and Equipment Techniques are included in the program cost. Past Land & Sea expeditions have gone to the Florida Keys, Monterey, California, the Galapagos, and Sea of Cortez, Mexico.
